This horrible footage of pounding piglets against concrete, among other horrors, was obtained by Mercy for Animals inside a Tyson Foods pig farm in Oklahoma, U.S..
Sadly, some of the most heartbreaking torture in this video is 100% legal and very common in pig farms across the world. This includes things such as locking pregnant pigs in maggot-infested cages where they can barely move and ripping the testicles of baby pigs without any pain killers. Not to mention cutting piglets’ tails without anesthesia and of course, pounding the heads of unwanted babies against concrete floor.
Why pounding piglets against concrete is deemed legal
As a rule of thumb, abuse that has economic benefits is usually deemed legal in addition to being practiced by most farms. This happens, among other reasons, because the lobby of the meat industry works hard to assure that abusive acts that increase profits will not be prohibited. On the other hand, abusive acts that are not done to increase profits, can be more easily classified as "animal cruelty" in the eyes of the law and the people who enforce it such as police officers, prosecutors and judges.
The farm will continue business as usual
In this video we can see several acts of torture that could be classified as illegal. Among such acts are all the punches, hits, kicks and pulling out the hair of pigs and piglets. In addition, some workers shoved their fingers inside pigs’ eyes and one worker threw a heavy bowling ball on a poor pig’s head. Sadly, even if this happens and workers are brought to trial, the farm will be able to continue business as usual and hire new workers who will be asked to perform all the legal acts of violence that the farm will ask of them.
