Heartbreaking: A Year Later, Goose Still Waits for Spouse who was Killed

Heartbreaking: Goose Waits Day After Day For Spouse Who Was Killed

Meet Pat, the Canada goose who is breaking the heart of workers in an office building in Portland, United States. It all started when a group of Canada geese, comprised of many couples, decided to stop outside the office building that’s in front of a lake. The geese were there to rest as they were making their annual journey from a cold winter to a hotter climate.

The Tragedy

Oregon Live reports the workers enjoyed the beautiful sight and were friendly to the geese, who in turn felt at ease near the workers. But then, a truck driver accidentally hit one of the geese. The driver decided to bring the goose inside the building that contained health clinics. However, the poor goose didn’t survive the incident.

The days passed and the workers started to notice that one of the geese is looking inside their windows and walking around the building. Apparently, this was the spouse of the goose who had died. The devoted partner was looking for his other half, as geese mate for life. The days passed, and the workers decided to name the worried goose “Pat”.

Eventually, the group flew away to their next destination, and Pat joined them. Research shows that geese mourn their loved ones, and that some ‘widowers’ never mate again and prefer to spend the rest of their lives alone.

Now, a year later, Pat has returned to the same spot he last saw his spouse. He's been sitting outside the office building for many days. The workers identified him and placed a bowl of water to make his stay more comfortable. Despite that an entire year had passed, Pat never forgot his other half. It seems that he still has hope that she will walk out the building and he could feel whole again.

It’s not the first time that a story of a devoted goose reaches the media and breaks the hearts of many people.  In 2017, a picture of two geese saying goodbye became so viral in China, that millions of people found themselves rooting for one devoted goose.
