New leaked video from inside a Danish pig farm is causing a lot of controversy in Denmark. In this shocking video, we can see a worker holding the sweetest and tiniest baby piglet. Then, with the baby in his arms, the worker looks at the camera and says in amusement: “Looks like the little one got sick, let’s give him a medicine.” That’s when he takes hold of the baby from his hind legs, and continues to smash him against the hard floor.
According to Anima, the Danish organization that published this video, the act of smashing baby piglets that weight 5 kg or less is not only legal in Denmark, but also recommended as “humane” by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration. Sadly, killing unwanted babies in this manner is very common in pig farms all around the world, including in countries with higher welfare concerns.
The excuse for smashing baby pigs?
The excuse given by the authorities for labeling this vile practice as “humane” is that in theory, this method could cause a quick death due to a severe head trauma. In practice, many babies remain alive after they were hit. When this happens, they are left to slowly die in agony from their injuries.
From a common sense perspective, it’s hard to understand how such violent acts against vulnerable baby animals can be labeled “legal” and even “humane”. However, when we take a deeper look into what is happening inside animal farms all around the world, we can see that the animals are routinely tormented. So much so, that extremely violent practices are easily labeled as “humane”, simply because they’re less horrifying than other standard practices.
