The Greatest Immorality of Our Time - Alex O’Connor (Speech)

In this phenomenal speech, Alex O'Connor leaves little doubt about what is the greatest immorality of our time. Anyone interested in ethics and philosophy needs to hear this speech.

When Alex O'Connor began his successful YouTube journey, he focused on Atheism and religious philosophy. Back then, he did not challenge his meat-eating habits. Much like many of us, whenever a concern for the animals arose, he calmed it down by repeating to himself (and perhaps to others, as well) some sort of justification that he did not attempt to challenge.

But then everything changed when he read the book Animal Liberation by philosopher Peter Singer. From this point on, he began to challenge his former justifications and quickly found that they were superficial and untrue. Much like the misleading labels of "free-range" that suggest the hens are free on an open field when in reality they are crowded in a communal cage. These justifications and labels work for us because we want them to be true. Not because they are actually true.

Among other interesting insights, Alex O'Connor shares his explanation for why ethical thinkers such Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins refuse to touch the subject of veganism despite being aware that their own ethical doctrine aligns with veganism,  by quoting the powerful words of Jonathan Safran Foer in his book "Eating Animals": "It's always possible to wake someone from sleep, but no amount of noise will wake someone who is pretending to be asleep."

All in all, this is yet another great talk from Alex O'Connor, who always seems to provide the right amount of knowledge from other thinkers, in addition to original insights of his own. All in a fascinating and charismatic delivery. Very recommended!
