In this video, we get a look inside Cedar Meats, a Melbourne based company that is in the business of turning baby calves into meat products. According to Animal Liberation, Cedar Meats is an award-winning company that produces one of the most demanded product brands in the small stock industry. Similar to other small businesses that kill animals, Cedar Meats declares that it keeps the highest welfare standards. However, once again we learn that these welfare statements have everything to do with marketing and almost nothing to do with the truth.

The miserable dairy calves in Australia who are purchased by Cedar Meats, are taken to the slaughterhouse where they are treated with brutal violence. In this video, we can see how workers hit calves to get them to move and just because they feel like it.
In addition, we can see how even the minimal stunning standards that were set by the Australian meat industry itself, are not being met. Instead, the electrical prongs are used as a weapon to inflict even more pain on the babies, while leaving them conscious.
Why do they send bobby calves to slaughter?
Around a quarter of female calves and all of the male calves who are born on dairy farms are not needed. Since dairy cows are allowed to live for about 5 years, and given that they are made to give birth about once a year, there is no need for all the female calves who are born on dairy farms. As far as the males are concerned, they are always viewed as by-products, since they will never make milk.

The number of unwanted bobby calves who are sent to slaughter is directly related to our consumption of dairy. Every glass of cow's milk that is replaced with a glass of plant-based milk (such as almond/soy milk), makes a difference to the animals involved.
